Set up the perfect home office this Workers' Day

Category Advice

Workers' Day (1 May) pays homage to the working class of our great nation. De Lucia Group recognises your contributions to our country and achievements as you go from strength to strength in your career. COVID-19 has impacted workers; the biggest shift you've likely experienced is remote working during the lockdown. We explore the trend and look at ways to make a home office that will help you work healthier, happier, and more effectively.

Remote working rises in South Africa

During the stringent lockdown levels, remote working became the norm across the country. Instead of seeing productivity drop, employees displayed more motivation and reported benefits like work-life balance and less commuting stress. A salary survey found that 40% of South Africa's senior professionals now want to move to full-time remote work permanently.

Businesses have taken note of this and are looking at ways to make it happen. A flexible work survey found that South African businesses predict that in three years' time a third of their staff (33%) will still be working from home. If you're part of the work-from-home pack, having a home office set-up that boosts your productivity will be vital.

How to create your home office

The work you do at home should be just as good as in a conventional office. When putting together your home office, consider ergonomic furniture, office supplies, and a good internet connection. It's your space so also feel free to add your personal touches.

Put a plan in action: This is an important step often skipped because the need for an office space can be immediate. Think carefully about your budget and needs - both current and future. If your work role changes or you may have to share your space, these will impact what your home office will look like - and where you will place it.

Choose your location: Where you arrange your office will depend on your property. Whether you choose a spare room or corner, you will want to tick certain boxes. It should be away from distractions, well ventilated, and preferably with a view to keep you stimulated.

Demand on your broadband: A slow internet connection can make working from home an absolute pain, ensure your speed is sufficient to complete your tasks.

Invest in good furniture: Your chair and desk should be at the right height to prevent back pain or carpal tunnel syndrome. Look at what can be repurposed in your home or check out second-hand shops or classified websites for inexpensive items.

Gather your office stationery: At your office, it's easier to borrow office materials from a colleague. At home, you won't have this luxury so make sure you stock your own pens, paper, sticky notes, and other supplies to get your work done.

Make smart storage choices: You'll find clutter can easily pile up in a home office; having lots of storage will help. Install extra cupboards or floating shelves. You can also buy a filing cabinet or storage bins for office odds and ends.

Bring in the light: The amount of light in your workspace eases the glare of your computer, improves your mood, and makes your workspace feel bigger and more appealing. Position your workspace near windows and make use of overhead lights and desktop lamps.

Green up the place: You're going to have fun with wall art and desktop ornaments. But, you should also add house plants. These enrich your space with oxygen, help you feel calmer, and even inspire your creativity. Choose low-light-loving, hardy ferns and succulents to beautify your space without fuss.

Cybercrime: Working from home increases your risk of being exposed to cybercrime. Speak to your IT department or service provider to ensure you have adequate cyber and data security in place.
