It's time to spring clean your garden

Category Advice

Temperatures are rising. The birds are back from their vacation. Bright, cheerful blossoms are beginning to rise. That means one thing. Goodbye, winter. Hello, spring! This season celebrates fresh starts and life itself. So take that spring in your step and march outside. After a long winter, get your garden into shape with our guide.

Gardens pack on the property appeal

Your garden can boost your property's value. A well-maintained green space is sought-after for socialising, dining alfresco, and having a place for the kids to play. With tall trees and hedges, it even makes your property more private. Good gardens make a great first impression, showing you've invested time and energy into keeping a beautiful home. It takes more than just a few flowers - a well-thought-out space will make more of an impact.

Plan your perfect garden

Take a look at your space with a critical eye. Then map out the pathways, plants, trees, and water features you'd like to fill your space. Your garden scheme should complement your home yet be effortless to maintain. You'll need to make a list of post-winter repairs, plants to buy, and tools to replace. For that, take a trip to your local hardware store and nursery.

Let's go shopping

Never pinch pennies when buying your garden supplies. Garden tools, for example, in good condition will make your work easier and prevent diseases from spreading in your garden.

The same applies to your plants. Right now, nurseries are filled with spring plants and shrubs - talk to the staff about those that are best suited to your home. Some will thrive under higher rainfall, certain soil types, and specific climate conditions. As a general rule, pick plants that have healthy green leaves, unopened buds, a good shape, and are free from signs of disease.

Clean your garden

Winter winds and sunless days have likely left your landscape a little less than divine. Spend time clearing dead plant material, pruning perennials, and mowing your lawn. You can rake up dead leaves and seed gaps in your grass. Don't forget about your fences, gates, and trellises. If the bad weather has done damage, fix them with some elbow grease or hire help to restore them to their former glory.

Prep your soil

With healthy soil, you'll have a healthy garden. Get stuck in your beds and remove weeds, rocks, and stones. Your plant pals will love some help so fuel them with fertiliser. Each plant has its own nutrient needs but adding organic material like compost or manure can perk up their petals. Including a layer of mulch will also prevent diseases and stop weeds from sprouting.

Plant away

It's the moment you've been waiting for. After you've done preparing your soil, you can start scattering seeds and sowing plants. There are so many plants that will work well in South African gardens from delicate hellebores, vibrant bearded irises, to charming Barberton daisies. Why stop at ornamental flowers? By including a vegetable patch, you can harvest fresh produce for a healthier summer.

Sit back and relax

Spring has sprung and with it comes longer days. It's a wonderful season to enjoy the outdoors in your garden. After all that hard work, give yourself a break and forget about the lockdown. Perhaps gather the family for a picnic, find a quiet spot for reading, or take your furbaby for a stroll. You've put in the effort - go reap the rewards.
