How to avoid house fires?

What are the main causes of house fires?

  • Electrical equipment left unattended such as heaters, stoves, irons, and electrical blankets;

  • Leaking stoves or gas heaters;

  • Candles left unattended or left burning near curtains;

  • Falling asleep with a lit cigarette in bed;

  • An overheating computer that ignites;

  • Incidents relating to poor maintenance of fireplaces;

  • Cellphone chargers left unattended for long periods of time;

  • Electrical power sources that are overloaded; and

  • Children playing with matches or lighters near flammable objects.


Tips to avoid a house fire from occurring

  • Ensure all heat-generating equipment is in good, safe, and working condition;

  • Try to avoid using heating equipment to its maximum limits for an extended period of time;

  • Regularly have your gas bottles and equipment checked for any possible leaks;

  • Ensure all heat sources and appliances are turned off at night when not in use;

  • Unplug and switch off all electrical appliances that are not in use;

  • Avoid overloading one single power source;

  • Avoid overcharging electronic devices and try to keep these devices in a well-ventilated spot;

  • Keep flammable materials well away from heat sources;

  • Have fire extinguishers available, specifically near the kitchen;

  • Install smoke detectors throughout your home;

  • Teach your children good fire safety principles from a young age so that they understand the importance thereof;

  • Make sure that trip switches and emergency cut-off valves are in good working order;

  • Ensure all emergency contact details are easily accessible; and

  • Contact emergency response teams immediately.
