Kempton Park is a large town located in the eastern part of the Gauteng province in Ekurhuleni Municipality. It is positioned to the south of Tembisa and is situated close to the O.R. Tambo International Airport.

History of Kempton Park

The establishment of Kempton Park can be traced back to 24 August 1903, as a result of the subdivision of Karl Fredrich's farm, Zuurfontein, into 216 residential stands. Kempton Park was previously named "Kempten" after Karl's birth town in Bavaria, Germany. The name Kempten was later changed to Kempton Park.

O. R. Tambo International Airport (Africa's busiest and largest airport) is located in Kempton Park. In 1952 the airport, then known as Jan Smuts International Airport, was built on land next to the community and opened in 1953. The airport's name was changed to Johannesburg International Airport in the late 1990s and then to OR Tambo International Airport in 2006. Kempton Park has been part of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality since the year 2000.
